E17: A List About Movies! (Part 4)

Dispatch4.jpg

We wrap up our four part series on the American Film Institute list of the top 100 American films of all time. This episode covers takes us from E.T. all the way to the number one movie? What could it be?  Okay, it's Citizen Kane. Spoiler Alert.

We were inspired to do this by the Unspooled podcast with Paul Scheer and Amy Nicholson.  Please check it out if you'd prefer a lot of insight by two people who have, in fact, seen the movies on the list. Their podcast is really great.  This one is just kind of dumb, but what the hey!

E13: Random Lines From That Noir Novel I Am Writing

Dispatch4.jpg

There's a certain romance to the idea of hammering away at a detective story on a manual typewriter, with a glass of whiskey to the side as an overhead fan pushes motes of dust in the shafts of light poring through the slats of wooden window blinds. Sometimes you just want to be Raymond Chandler or Dashiell Hammett. Sometimes you just want to create a wisecracking private eye in the grand noir tradition. But, sometimes you are too lazy to actually write a whole book, so here are some random lines from my upcoming someday tale, A Game Of Lies.

E11: Questions Raised By Billy Joel's Piano Man

Dispatch4.jpg

No song is more identified with Billy Joel than Piano Man (except for maybe some weird fringe groups that are really into We Didn't Start The Fire).  The song seems like a lovely slice of life tune about a struggling musician making his way by playing piano in a bar to largely inattentive patrons. But the song really does bring up a lot of questions. Questions we will raise here, but do nothing whatsoever to answer.

E10: Rejected Slogans For Breakfast Cereals

Dispatch4.jpg

Breakfast cereals, like any other product, are marketed to consumers in a way designed to make us buy, buy, buy them. There is an art, and, indeed, a science to selecting just the right slogan to tantalize customers.

Here are some original concepts (which we clearly just made up) that didn't quite hit the mark.

E9: Predictions For The Final Season Of Game Of Thrones By A Guy Who Is Afraid of Squirrels

Dispatch4.jpg

Game of Thrones returns for its final season in April.  There are so many storylines to wrap up! Who will win the Iron Throne? What will become of the army of White Walkers? How will the dragons play into all this?  How much gratuitous nudity will there be?  But, perhaps more terrifying than the army of the undead and the treachery abounding in Westeros, is the true menace confronting us all. And that is, of course, squirrels.

Because when squirrels play Game Of Thrones, we all die.

E7: Lesser Known Examples Of The Mandela Effect

Dispatch4.jpg

The Mandela Effect posits that your memories may contain artifacts from a different timeline. In timeline one, there were Berenstein Bears, while in our current timeline, they are the Berenstain Bears. It would be easy to dismiss this as just simple errors, but that explanation is neither interesting nor funny. Prepare yourself to shift timelines and learn of some of the lesser known examples of the Mandela effect. And may this timeline be your best.

E4: Infinite Monkeys

Dispatch4.jpg

One of the classic philosophical exercises is to ponder on what would happen if one had an infinite number of monkeys along with an infinite number of typewriters. The results of such an endeavor would be nothing short of amazing. Or would it?
